I need to buy fins, mask and snorkel for our upcoming trip in early July. What brands and models are people using? If price is not a big consideration, is there any advantage to going to a dive shop as opposed to a sporting goods chain?

For masks I like the Cressi "Big Eye" series; snorkels any of the Tusa Hyperdry without the fancy valves that don't work (just a purge valve), fins really are the larger the better (brand is irrelevant).
A dive shop should give you the best service and personalized advice, however, I have had success buying my gear on-line from Leisure Pro and Diver's Supply. Masks always seemed to fit and the pricing is great.

Thanks. Leisure Pro in particular looks to have an excellent selection.

Hi. We are leaving Wed. for GC. I was planning on renting gear for our family of 4, but am having a little trouble finding a place to rent gear for the week. Can anyone help with info? Thanks.

Where are you staying?
Just about all the dive ops, dive stores and water sports rental places will have snorkel gear for rent. Some of the hotels like the Reef Resort and turtle Nest Inn also rent or provide free use of gear.
If you plan on using the gear for the whole week, buying and bringing from home may be a cost effective option if it doesn't mean extra baggage fees.
Another alternative to renting is buying snorkel sets on the island. The Cost U Less in Governor's Plaza across from the Westin is very similar to Costco and has inexpensive sets for sale (around $50 CI, IIRCC).
I think rental of a full snorkel set (Fins, Mask & Snorkel) can go for around $10-$15 US a day, so if you even get a discount for a weekly rental it may still actually cost less to buy on island.

Cressi makes awesome gear. I would always recommend buying instead of renting.
